RSPCA NSW is urging pet owners to desex their cats with kitten season now on our doorstep.
A drier and warmer than average end to the year is forecast for our state, turning up the heat for sexually mature undesexed cats in your local area.
Every year, RSPCA NSW cares for 16,000 cats and kittens across the state. As the mercury rises, so does the number of kittens coming through our doors.
During kitten season, feline intake at RSPCA NSW increases by eight times, up to 500 kittens each week. With so many kittens coming into our care, our resources and staff are stretched to their limits providing nutrition, water, beds and veterinary care for all of them.
In just two years, a pair of undesexed cats can lead to 20,000 kittens. Desexing is vitally important to prevent unwanted pregnancies and keeps your beloved feline friend healthy.
A third of cats and kittens surrendered to RSPCA NSW are by owners who were not able to cope with the extra mouths to feed and 3,000 kittens are surrendered annually from the homes they were born into.
Desexed animals live longer, are less likely to get certain illnesses (like uterine infections and mammary gland cancer), and experience a reduction in behaviour problems like roaming, aggression and urine marking.
