font-size: large;\"\u003EThe results tell us 86% of older adults with pets experience improved mental and physical health.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EWhen it comes to older adults living at home, the survey reveals \u003Cb\u003E61% of older adults live alone\u003C\/b\u003E, and 74% of older adults with pets say their animals provide companionship and reduce loneliness.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EWhilst 40% of older adults who receive a Home Care Package (HCP) have pets,\u0026nbsp;\u003Cb\u003Eonly 9% of these pet owners receive pet care support\u003C\/b\u003E, such as walking their dog (64% need help) and taking their pet to the vet (62% need help).\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ECANA's\u0026nbsp;\u003Cb\u003EPets in Aged Care Survey\u003C\/b\u003E\u0026nbsp;shows an urgent need to support pet ownership for older Australians who choose to live independently.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EMs Ennis says, “The health and well-being benefits of pet ownership are measurable and indisputable. Where this happens, management activities must be justified, effective, and humane.  \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThe plan recommends trapping by members of the public, which may potentially have adverse effects on the well-being of cats, including owned, semi-owned and unowned cats. It is of utmost importance that the welfare of all animals, native, introduced and domestic, is carefully considered and managed in a humane manner.  \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EWe're also concerned with some of the language that has been used in conjunction with this plan and firmly believe that demonising any animal, even when there is a need to control them, is not the way to promote good animal welfare and could have unintended negative consequences.  \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cb\u003E\u003Ci\u003ERSPCA NSW\u003C\/i\u003E\u003C\/b\u003E strongly advocates for a more comprehensive approach to managing cat overpopulation. Within that consultation other stakeholders included, local council representatives, the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ci\u003E\u003Cb\u003EPet Industry Association of Australia\u003C\/b\u003E\u003C\/i\u003E, rehoming representatives and\u0026nbsp;\u003Cb\u003E\u003Ci\u003ERSPCA Victoria\u003C\/i\u003E\u003C\/b\u003E.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-size: large;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003EVia the consultancy company, AWV provided a draft of the census to stakeholders who were asked for their feedback.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003EConcerns raised by stakeholders (including\u0026nbsp;\u003Cb\u003EAnimal Care Australia\u003C\/b\u003E) regarding the intent and outcomes of the census’ received the same response, “that will be dealt with later in the next stage” from AWV representatives.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003EOf particular concern was\u0026nbsp;\u003Cb\u003Ehow the data would be collected\u003C\/b\u003E, and\u0026nbsp;\u003Cb\u003Ehow data sets might be combined\u003C\/b\u003E\u0026nbsp;in order for local councils or other enforcements agencies to utilise that data to advance their own agendas.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003EAWV representatives categorically stated the data and data sets would not be able to be linked in order to be used against residents or for the purpose of enforcement. Think about that!\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003E\u003Cb\u003ELocal councils each have their own animal number restrictions\u003C\/b\u003E\u0026nbsp;(via Domestic Animal Management Plans) in addition to Planning Law restrictions that they are now also enforcing.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003EThose restrictions are placed on land less than 20 acres, used to keep, breed, board, or train animals, \u003Cb\u003Eincluding livestock and birds\u003C\/b\u003E; and stipulate a \u003Cb\u003Erestriction of up to 5 animals being permitted on land without planning permits\u003C\/b\u003E that require a change of land use. So how will this data be verified as being up to standard or more concerning will not be misinterpreted as potential failure to provide proper welfare and therefore justify a claim of excessive animal cruelty?\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: georgia;\"\u003E1.
