Loki the Kitten's Fight for Life

Pet Insurance Australia takes a look at the importance of pet insurance when the unforeseen occurs and chats to Simon Cowell  - no, not the TV celebrity! - about his precious kitten Loki, who is continuing her road to recovery.

“Only a pet owner can understand the love and dedication you have for your furry family member,” Nadia Crighton from Pet Insurance Australia says. “Pets are a vital part of family life, offering unconditional love and support.”

Because of this, it is truly incredible the lengths pet owners will go to ensure their pet’s wellbeing and happiness.
“In a national study of pet ownership by Animal Medicines Australia it is estimated that pet owners happily spent $12.2 billion on their pets in 2016,” Crighton says.

“This just shows the incredible bond pet owners share with their companion animals, and how willing they are to ensure their pets have only the very best in life.”

With Australia having one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world, it is no surprise that pet owners have some of the very best veterinary services, specialists and treatment options available to them.

“Unlike 20 years ago, specialist care and treatment options for our pets is now becoming readily available,” Crighton says. “Many of your wonderful local vets are actually top surgeons or have access to some incredible medical advancements, treatments and technology that were previously unheard of in a smaller practice.”

However, this advancement in expertise, testing and treatments comes at a price. “It’s no secret that vet care is not cheap,” Crighton says. “When the unforeseen occurs, pet insurance can be an invaluable tool when dealing with the emotional strain and pain a sick or injured pet can bring.”

Meet Loki, a 20-month-old beloved cat, who became very ill as a young kitten.

“Pet insurance turned out to be critical for our kitten since developing a chronic lung condition that has baffled the vets and required lots of return visits last year,” Simon Cowell, Loki’s loving owner says. “Pet insurance has helped more than I ever thought it would when we first decided to sign up for a policy.”

Sadly without pet insurance, it may be a very different outcome for Loki. With the vets desperately looking for answers and the kitten needing various examinations and investigations into her ongoing symptoms, the price of medical bills was quickly escalating.

“I don't even want to imagine what we would have done without the insurance,” Simon says. “The treatments would not have been possible without taking out a bank loan or something like that.”

Having pet insurance allowed Simon to get a good night's rest knowing his kitten was in the best hands possible. Loki is currently still on the road to recovery and is currently trying a new treatment that is looking very positive.

Simon is not alone. “We literally have thousands of life-saving stories that pet insurance has provided over the years,” Crighton says. “One of the most rewarding parts of my job is interacting with those clients who we have given peace-of-mind during such an emotional time.”

Like with all policies or important documents it’s vital to read the fine print and take the time to fully understand what you are paying for.

“At PIA we strive to make our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) clear and easy to understand,” Crighton says. “Understandably we all live in a very fast, click-on click-off world and people just don’t have time to spare. We have kept this in mind when developing the PDS and have made it as compact as possible.
At PIA we urge all of our clients to take a tea-break, pull up a chair and spend the time reading the PDS and getting a good understanding of what they are covered for, and what they are not covered for.”

The PDS is also available online so clients can easily access this information at any time of the day or night.
