Cat Lovers Book Club - April 2022

With the Easter school holidays just around the corner and temperatures dipping, it's time to stock up on some good reads!
After a long hiatus our monthly Cat Lovers Book Club selection is back with our top picks of inspirational and educational book releases for cat lovers of all ages.

THE STRAY CATS OF HOMS
by Eva Nour

An unforgettable debut novel, inspired by the true story of one boy's extraordinary life in Syria. For fans of The Kite Runner, The Beekeeper of Aleppo, The Pianist of Yarmouk and The Tattooist of Auschwitz.
'A cat has seven souls in Arabic. In English cats have nine lives. You probably have both nine lives and seven souls, because otherwise I don't know how you've made it this far.'
Sami's childhood is much like any other - an innocent blend of family and school, of friends and relations and pets (including stray cats and dogs, and the turtle he keeps on the roof).

But growing up in one of the largest cities in Syria, with his country at war with itself, means that nothing is really normal. And Sami's hopes for a better future are ripped away when he is conscripted into the military and forced to train as a map maker.

Sami may be shielded from the worst horrors of the war, but it will still be impossible to avoid his own nightmare.

Inspired by extraordinary true events, The Stray Cats of Homs is the story of a young man who will do anything to keep the dream of home alive, even in the face of unimaginable devastation.

Tender, wild and raw, it is a novel which will stay with you for ever.

SOUL CATS
How Our Feline Friends Teach Us to Live from the Heart

by Tamara Schenk
"Life often offers miracles; you just have to see them and take action."- Max
Sometimes life calls upon us to take matters into our own paws.

Soul Cats
carries with it a very special and personal mission. The dying wish of "soul cat" Max was for his human guardian to write this very book, as he passed away just a few short weeks after.

Within the pages lies a story overflowing with deep love between Max, Flix, Howy, and their human guardians. Together, their love is the prevailing force that sees them through times of significant challenges.

Our animal-human relationships exist on a plane of consciousness that transcends that of our relationships between other humans. Soul Cats puts the reader in the perfect centre of our animal-human relationship, engaging in a journey about communication, true connection, distress and the light that gets us all through it.

We all come with our own mental and physical baggage, something that older cats from the animal shelter share in common with us. Soul Cats explores the symbiotic healing power of cats and their humans caring for one another until they one day cross the rainbow bridge on their own terms.

Soul Cats is teeming with stories-following the alpha cat Max, cerebral thinker Flix, and the ever-bright Howy. The cats and their human guardians experience situations laced with joy and emotion, but also those of profound and sobering reality.

At its core, Soul Cats makes an indisputable case for how conventional medicine, natural healing methods, and energy clearing work can create a powerful trinity of relief and deep meaning in our lives.

The experience of reading Soul Cats is one that touches the soul of the reader. It's a beautiful story that weaves together courage, deep care, and shows the power that a legacy of love can produce.
"Let love and joy be your guiding principles."- Howy

CATS IN THE CITY OF PLAGUE
by A.L. Marlow

Set amidst the chaos of the worst pandemic in history, the Black Death of the 14th century, Cats in the City of Plague tells the tale of a group of cats who are unfairly blamed for the plague.

The main character, Leander, and his fellow cats cannot understand why people they have trusted have turned against them. But they realize that their only hope of survival is to escape from the French city that has long been their home and return to the forests where, cat legend has it, their kind originally lived.

While evading the humans who seek to destroy them, the cats embark on what Booklife calls "a tense and dramatic journey through the city, powered by the danger and sacrifice inherent in tales of epic quests."

Racing over rooftops, hiding in the cathedral's crypt, can they make it out of the city before dawn reveals them? And if they do make it, can these city cats learn to live in the wild?

The setting of a great pandemic will resonate with modern readers, but it's the flight of these intrepid cats that makes Cats in the City of Plague an unforgettable story.
