The Soft Hours Wool Cat Portraits

A side-by-side comparison of a lifelike Siamese wool felt pet portrait and the real cat that inspired the art.

When Grief Has No Words

Losing a cat is a quiet, profound heartbreak. You find yourself listening for the soft thud of paws on the bed, or looking toward their favourite sun-drenched windowsill before you remember they’re gone. The house feels still in a way that’s hard to explain to those who haven't shared their lives with a feline companion.

Amy, the founder of the Sydney-based studio The Soft Hours, understands this silence. Following the loss of her beloved Golden Retriever, Daisy, Amy realised that generic memorials—mass-produced paw prints or stock posters—couldn’t bridge the gap left by a soul animal

She turned to needle-felting to "hold" her own grief, and now helps cat families across Australia do the same, driven by the belief that the unique bond we share with our cats deserves to be truly, tangibly held.

Art You Can Hold

From screen to soul: Amy uses your reference photos to meticulously sculpt every whisker and expression, ensuring a perfect likeness for every feline commission

Every memorial from The Soft Hours is meticulously handcrafted in Amy’s Sydney studio using hand-dyed merino wool and wire. Working from your photos, Amy captures the essence of your cat—not just the pattern of their tabby stripes or the glow of their coat, but the specific, knowing tilt of their head and the soulful depth of their eyes.

"Pet loss is a disenfranchised grief," Amy says. "People are often expected to move on quickly, especially with cats.

I wanted to create something that said: No, this mattered. They mattered."

A Gift of Healing

With Mother’s Day approaching, these portraits have become a deeply moving gift for "Cat Mums" navigating a recent loss. For a generation that lives between the digital and the physical, the studio also offers the LumiCube—a holographic tribute that uses technology to keep a cat’s memory vividly alive.

Because each piece is a labour of love taking 6 to 10 weeks to handcraft, ordering early ensures Amy can dedicate the necessary time to every whisker and detail.
