The Cat Protection Society of Victoria is seeing spike in abandoned kittens

• The Cat Protection Society of Victoria (CPSV) is experiencing a spike in the number of vulnerable kittens arriving as strays and surrenders at its shelter.

• During the first three months of 2025, the non-profit organisation provided refuge for 280 kittens through its foster care program — a 62% increase on the same period last year and 107% higher than the first quarter of 2023.

• CPSV, which relies on donations, volunteers and community support to provide care and homes for abandoned cats, is struggling to manage the soaring number of admissions.

• It costs an average of $525 per kitten to provide foster care for an average three-week period to prepare kittens for adoption.

The Cat Protection Society of Victoria (CPSV) is calling on all Victorian cat lovers to help make a difference by donating to its biggest annual fundraising tax appeal, running from 19 May to 30 June. All tax-deductible donations will support CPSV’s furry residents who rely on the care and generosity of the community, including the voluntary efforts of its cat foster carers.

CPSV’s dedicated foster carers provide safe, nurturing temporary homes for kittens not yet ready for adoption, giving them the best start in life. With kitten season showing no signs of slowing, the need has never been greater. 

A generous donation helps supply the essentials vulnerable kittens need to grow, heal and thrive.

CPSV Marketing and Communications Manager Rachel Bitzilis said the first three months of 2025 saw CPSV providing refuge to 280 kittens through its foster care program, in addition to the cats and kittens already awaiting adoption— a 62% increase on the same period last year and 107% higher than the first quarter of 2023.

“More and more kittens are arriving at the shelter in the most heart-breaking condition—starving, helpless and alone. These kittens are too young to be adopted, too small to survive on their own and desperately in need of a safe place to heal,” Rachel said.

“With love, care and a warm foster home, kittens get the chance to truly thrive. Our foster carers generously open their hearts and homes to give them a fresh start and every tax-deductible donation helps make that possible, helping fund everything from soft, comforting toys to vital veterinary checks and vaccinations.”

Each kitten spends around 21 days in foster care, costing $25 a day ($525 for the three weeks); thus, the 280 kittens requiring foster care during the first quarter of 2025 blew out to $147,000. These figures do not include medical costs or the many other cats and kittens already in the adoption shelter awaiting a fresh start with a loving family.

“Our relief fund aims to support our devoted foster carers and ensure this program continues to make a difference. Just $80 can desex a female kitten and prevent her from giving birth to more than 180 kittens in her lifetime,” Rachel added.

“A donation to our appeal isn’t just a gift for today – it represents hope for the future with one less kitten suffering; one more life saved.”

One of the most heart-warming success stories is young Solomon, a six-week-old kitten who was found sheltering under a porch, frightened, injured and alone.

When Solomon arrived at CPSV, he was suffering from a severe tail injury and was too weak to drink or eat on his own. He underwent surgery to amputate his tail and was given fluid therapy to stabilise him.

Given Solomon’s timid nature and age, CPSV determined he would recover best in a foster home. One of CPSV’s dedicated foster carers Hannah welcomed Solomon into her home and provided the one-on-one care he needed to heal both physically and emotionally.

“Solomon was very shy when I brought him home. He just hid underneath the blankets in his carrier,” Hannah said.

“Over three weeks, Solomon regained his strength and confidence. Seeing his growth in trust and the way he now interacts has been very rewarding.”

GAWS assists community with free cat desexing program

The Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) is helping make responsible pet ownership more achievable with its ‘Fix a Feline Friend for Free’ program.

With the support of Animal Welfare Victoria, GAWS is offering free desexing and microchipping for 120 eligible pet cats until July 31; aiming to assist pet owners who are in financial need.

GAWS CEO Helen Cocks said the free desexing program is part of GAWS’ commitment to provide services which enable responsible animal ownership and improve the wellbeing of both people and their pet companions.

“The wellbeing of both our community and pets is important to GAWS and we are pleased to be able to offer this free cat desexing and microchipping service,” Ms Cocks said.

“This initiative will help those who would like to desex their cat but are not in the financial position to do so.”

It will improve the health and wellbeing of the cat, reduce the number of unwanted cat pregnancies and reduce pressure on already crowded animal shelters.”

Cat owners can apply for a GAWS free cat desexing voucher through the National Desexing Network, a nationwide referral system for discounted desexing for pet owners in financial need.

Vouchers are available to applicants over the age of 18 who reside in the City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula, Golden Plains or Queenscliffe shires and hold a current Centrelink pension or concession card.

GAWS head veterinarian Dr Ruth Dover said the most well-known benefit of desexing a pet cat is to prevent unwanted litters, but the many additional health benefits might be a surprise to cat owners.

“Desexed cats often live longer, healthier lives because they are less prone to certain health issues and behaviours that can put them at risk,” Dr Ruth said.

“Desexing your cat can lower the risk of some infections and cancers. Cats who are desexed are less likely to engage in aggressive behaviour. It can reduce spraying, yowling, excessive grooming and roaming.

“Generally, desexed cats are more content and relaxed.” 

Last year, almost 2000 cats came into GAWS care.

Fix a Feline Friend for Free voucher eligibility criteria:

• Applicants must be over the age of 18
• Reside in areas serviced by GAWS' shelter and community vet clinic – City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula, Golden Plains or Queenscliffe shires.
• Hold a current Centrelink pension or concession card
• One voucher per person for one cat
• To be redeemed by 31st July 2025 (may be extended based on availability)
• Cats only, male or female
• 120 vouchers available

Fundraising and donations can make an impact on the lives of more than 1,200 cats and kittens who require the care of CPSV each year.

The Cat Protection Society of Victoria (CPSV) is calling on businesses to make a lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable cats and kittens through workplace giving. Whether through fundraising events, corporate sponsorship or volunteering, workplaces can help transform lives, one whisker at a time.

Workplace giving helps cats in need while benefiting employees and businesses with studies showing that those who participate in giving programs are 13% more productive, and 93% of employees who volunteer through work feel happier with their employer.

CPSV Marketing and Communications Manager Rachel Bitzilis said that the generosity of businesses, workplaces and community groups can make a direct impact to the lives of over 1,200 cats and kittens each year.

“Workplace giving is an easy and impactful way for businesses to support our cause and these contributions help provide food, shelter and medical care to the cats and kittens in our care,” Rachel said.

“Workplace fundraising events have already proven to be a huge success. Organisations such as Elanco, NAB and the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) have stepped up, showing just how much of a difference collective workplace generosity can make.

“Thanks to their fundraising and volunteering, we can give cats in need a warm bed, a full belly, essential vet care and lots of love.”

In 2024 DFFH held a series of workplace fundraising events to raise over $1,600 to support CPSV’s essential work. The team hosted a “Cakes for Cats” afternoon tea, conducted in office raffles and even partnered with local businesses to run a “Guess the Jellybean” competition. 

Their incredible efforts helped to ensure that CPSV could provide over 60 cats with one night’s accommodation at the adoption shelter and the promise of a warm, safe bed, full tummy and thorough veterinary assessment.

DFFH Senior Project Officer Jasmine Lovell said the events provided a fun and rewarding opportunity for team bonding, leadership development and community impact.

“Fundraising for CPSV was a great way to bring our team together and support a cause we care about. I would encourage other organisations to get involved because not only is it a very worthwhile cause but it’s also a mutually beneficial situation,” Jasmine said.

“Getting involved as a team can really strengthen relationships, develop new skillsets, and have a lasting positive impact on individual employees, overall workplace culture, and the cause.”

2. Incorporate Wet Food into Their Diet

Wet cat food can contain up to 80% water, making it an excellent way to boost hydration. “Including wet food in your cat’s diet not only enhances their water intake but also supports overall nutrition,” says Dr Jenkins.

3. Use Multiple Water Stations

Cats are more likely to drink water if it’s easily accessible. Place water bowls in multiple areas around your home, particularly in spots your cat frequents. Dr Jenkins adds, “Having multiple water sources encourages cats to drink more without effort.”

4. Enhance Treat Time with Hydration

Adding a small amount of water to treats, like Breeder’s Choice Tasty Treats, can provide an extra source of hydration while keeping treat time enjoyable. 

“Softening treats with water not only helps with hydration but can also be a great way to cater to cats with sensitive teeth or gums,” suggests Dr Jenkins.
